Educador jurídico estadounidense. Estudió derecho en Harvard (1851–54) y ejerció en Nueva York hasta 1870, cuando aceptó una cátedra y luego el decanato en la escuela de derecho de Harvard (1870–95). Su método de casos para la enseñanza del derecho, en el que los estudiantes leían y analizaban las fuentes originales e inducían por sí mismos los principios del derecho, con el tiempo se convirtió en el método dominante en las escuelas de derecho de EE.UU. Su obra Selection of cases on the law of contracts [Selección de casos en materia de derecho contractual] (1871) fue el primer libro de texto basado en el método de casos.
